love & war

love climbed the belfry stairs
lost count but at the very top
surveyed, not being blind
possessed with perfect sight
love spied a choir of
sparrows singing psalms
conducted by the breeze
a boy child building on the beach
his mother looking pleased,

war asthmatic in the chest
struggled weary up the
same steep stairs, myopic
possessed with blood-shot
eyes, ‘lend me your vision
love’ war decreed and viewed
a group of sparrows mute
a boy child dead beside the sea
his mother looking --------

‘if only we could swap our optic
heritage my love’ I like what I
perceive, if only if only
and so the battle rages
only a half-built castle in the sand.
